Counselling in Matlock and Derbyshire

Counselling and psychotherapy have been used as methods of healing for over 100 years. They have now become well established within contemporary medicine. Different approaches vary greatly within different disciplines. The approach at Bright Light Therapy incorporates Humanistic and Person-Centred philosophies, which are discussed further below. ‘A problem shared is a problem halved’ – which is evident to any of us who are lucky enough to have a trusted friend, but the environment in a counselling session and the relationship between you and the counsellor can provide for real growth and change..

Who Is Counselling & Psychotherapy For?

Anyone can benefit from counselling and psychotherapy regardless of age, gender or any other demographic. Therapeutic counselling is offered to all individuals and children with a variety of difficulties including childhood abuse, eating disorders, relationship difficulties, identity and attachment, amongst others. Whether or not Counselling or Psychotherapy is for you will be decided by yourself and Claire-Elaine in a mutual assessment session.

To consider how Counselling and Psychotherapy might be able to help you, please take a moment to see if any of the following questions apply to you:

  • Are there aspects of your life that no longer work for you?
  • Do you experience physical or emotional discomfort?
  • Are issues from the past holding you back?
  • Is there something missing in your life?
  • Do you ever wonder why you keep ending up in the same place (failed relationship, unhappy career, depressed or unhappy)?
  • Are you in a life crisis?
  • Do you feel alone, isolated stuck angry or confused?

If the answer is yes to one or more of these questions, maybe Counselling or Psychotherapy can help you resolve or change your situation.

What Might Be Involved In A Counselling or Psychotherapy Session?

A typical session of counselling or psychotherapy revolves around talking. This is based on the creation of an environment and atmosphere by Claire-Elaine that is safe and open. The development of a relationship to enable you to express your true self and feelings is the primary focus, and talking is only one method of working. Other tools that may be used include:

  • Play
  • Art Work
  • Writing
  • Creative expression
  • Visualisation
  • Storytelling
  • Focussing on physical sensations
  • Dance
  • Physical release
  • Meditation

The number of sessions that will be needed are entirely dependant on your individual needs, but can range from focussed work of about 4 to 6 session, to longer term relationship therapy that is undertaken over a longer period of time. It is most beneficial to meet weekly, for 1 hour sessions. Clear boundaries and a therapeutic contract are established in the consultation assessment, which set the stage for work to develop.

The Counselling & Psychotherapy Approach

The approach used by Claire-Elaine incorporates Humanistic and Person-Centred philosophies and techniques. At the heart of this lies a firm belief in YOU as the expert: You know yourself better than anyone, You know what you need, You know what your problems are, You hold the answers you are seeking, and most importantly, You hold the power to transform yourself and your life. Claire-Elaine has skills and tools to create an environment that is safe and open. Within this environment, you are empowered to find and bring into being the solutions that you need to bring about change.
